Into the Television Set

I used to wonder, as a kid, what it would be like if I could get sucked in the television set and be transported into the world of whatever cartoon I was on. Two images come to mind, recalling this memory; the girl from the Ring coming out of the tv and that cowboy character from Willy Wonka who gets shrunk into the tv.

Anyways, I was going through boxes in my parents’ basement and came across some artwork I had done in kindergarten. There were a lot of drawings of people with television sets for heads. This pattern of drawing, I do remember doing even in high school as well. By that point, the people’s heads had emerged into some lines/shapes. Not sure yet what this whole tendency was about, but I think I have a few theories.

I think it was clear by the repetitiveness, that I was watching a lot of tv/even begin on my computer as I got older. The idea that people and technology were merging seemed to make sense to me. Almost like the tv set was an actual living thing and the people in my life were a collection of stories such as those that would be projected on the screen.

The memory reminds me of the vivid imagination I had and a curiosity with stepping into other worlds. A desire to understand what different places and such would feel like to be in it, or to be a different character.
